Variety of Available Materials
When planning a new deck, pergola, gazebo, or fence, choosing the right material is just as important as the design. Each material has its own strengths, costs, and maintenance requirements. Below are the most commonly used options in the Calgary area:

Untreated Spruce – Budget-friendly, but with a very short lifespan (just a few years).

ACQ-Treated Lumber – Longer-lasting than spruce, treated with preservatives to resist decay.

Western Red Cedar – A naturally durable wood with a much longer lifespan than spruce or treated lumber, and only about 10–15% more expensive than ACQ-treated lumber.

Tropical Hardwood (Kayu, etc.) – Very long lifespan, naturally beautiful, but more costly.

Composite & Synthetic Options – Virtually maintenance-free, available in a wide variety of colours and finishes, and backed by manufacturer warranties.
